Steel tube specifications
Many cyclists have an obsession - their frames. They are afraid that their frames are too heavy or that the tubes are not of good enough quality. Quality being either weight or the frame sticker, or maybe even how thick the tubes are. And some think that the different steel types are important. All steel tubes are basically made of iron, with a minute dash of this or that to make it easier to weld or bend. So here is a table of bicycle steel tube dimensions. I made it because it is so difficult to find any useable information on the web. It took some time to put together and I am hoping not too many glitches have found their way into the table. These are the most common tubesets on western style bikes. There are a lot of other tube companies out there but they are not easy to find. I know China and Taiwan make some top notch tubesets but alas I don’t know what they are called - so I can’t find them. Or maybe they are not so obsessed with stickers. But other countries like India (for ex. Amardeep Steel Centre) and Europe (for ex. Camus) or in Asia (for ex. JiouJiou or Sanko Chromoly) make good no brand name bike tubes. How good? We will never know. Now there are too many plastic tubes.
